This test helps identify potential weaknesses or vulnerabilities in the package design or materials ensuring it meets safety standards and can withstand stresses during transportation and handling.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"ai-optimize-10\"><b>How is Burst Strength Measured?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-11\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Burst strength is the ability of a material or object (such as a metal pipe) to maintain its integrity when subjected to pressure.\u00a0 The burst strength is quantified in kilograms per square centimeter.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-12\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To calculate the burst factor of a corrugated or flexible package, both the burst strength and the grammage (density) of the packaging material are taken into consideration.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"ai-optimize-13\"><b>Burst factor = Burst Strength (kg\/cm2) x 1000\/Grammage (gm\/m2)<\/b><\/h4>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-14\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To assess this, the package is expanded through the use of a rubber diaphragm or another technique until either the package or its seals rupture.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"ai-optimize-15\"><b>How Do You Test Bursting Strength According to the Standard?<\/b><\/h2>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-16\">To perform a burst test according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.petrosync.com\/blog\/what-is-asme-pcc-2\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ASME PCC-2<\/a> guidelines, there are several straightforward steps to follow. These steps are important because they help ensure the safety and effectiveness of materials and products used in various applications.<\/p>\n<h3 class=\"ai-optimize-17\"><b>Proof Test Qualification Requirements<\/b><\/h3>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-18\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Instead of using the traditional engineered design approach, a burst test can be conducted on a mock-up buildup to assess and approve the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.petrosync.com\/blog\/what-is-weld-buildup\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">weld buildup<\/a> design. The burst test serves as an alternative method to verify the effectiveness and reliability of the weld buildup design.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"ai-optimize-19\"><b>1. General Requirements<\/b><\/h4>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-20\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A satisfactory mock-up burst test can qualify the weld buildup design for use in the same orientation, on the same type of item, and at the same location on fittings. Simulation of Thin Area<\/b><\/h4>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-33\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To replicate the area of wall-thinning during <a href=\"https:\/\/www.petrosync.com\/blog\/pressure-testing\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pressure testing<\/a>, a rounded-corner segment of the base material in the mock-up must be removed. This represents the maximum size ratio <\/span><b>(axial dimension of L and circumferential dimension of C)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the location of thinning or pitting that the weld buildup will compensate for.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-34\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A plug made of the same base material with a uniform thickness <\/span><b>(u)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> should be fully welded around the opening and flush with the outside surface of the pressure component. Another option is to remove an equivalent volume of base metal from the inside surface of the mock-up using machining or grinding, eliminating the need for welding in a closure plug.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"ai-optimize-35\"><b>3. Buildup Thickness<\/b><\/h4>\n<p class=\"ai-optimize-36\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The buildup section thickness (sum of deposit and base metal) indicated by dimensions <\/span><b>(u)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><b>(w)<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in Figure 202-3-1 should not exceed 87.5% of the nominal wall thickness for the thinned area of the mock-up. This ensures a conservative thickness to qualify the buildup design.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 class=\"ai-optimize-37\"><b>4.
