About Training
The basis of exploration plays requires the knowledge on petroleum systems and the sedimentary basin that it is in. This course covers the theory and practice of basin analysis, wherein participants will learn to develop and optimize their evaluation process in finding out how good enough a basin can generate oil or gas.
Participants will be able to learn basin analysis in the aspects of sedimentary fills and tectonics, seismic and genetic sequence stratigraphy, and consequences of formation pressure characteristics. They will learn about different information needed to construct a better representation of the basin model. Furthermore, this course features the PetroMod software demonstration for application of basin analysis to basin modeling. Participants will learn aspects of petroleum systems modeling, and how to overcome the uncertainties that influences the calculations of hydrocarbon volumes. This course will include case studies from both conventional and unconventional petroleum exploration cases. These examples will be featured from Central Asia, Europe, and Africa. Quantitative exercises will also be provided to allow the participants to learn from hands-on practical experience. By the end of the course, the attendants will be capable of defining all the parameters for a working petroleum system.
Training Objectives
- UNDERSTAND the practice of basin analysis and its application to hydrocarbon potential
identification - EXAMINE and ANALYZE basins through important aspects of sedimentary formations,
- sequence stratigraphy, and subsurface pressure characteristics
- INDENTIFY the data elements required for basin analysis and apply this into the risk reduction aspect of exploration
- CALCULATE the probable risks involved in basin and petroleum systems modeling
- GENERATE basin models using a computer tool and sample data
- INTEGRATE data information for petroleum systems modeling and apply this to play fairway analysis
Audiences
The course is designed for exploration geoscientists who are involved with petroleum basin and systems modeling, and those who need to understand the methodology of hydrocarbon eveluation throught the analysis of these basins. Such as : Exploration Geologists, Exploration Geoscientists, Exploration Managers.
Instructor
DR. FIVOS SPATHOPOULOS
Dr Fivos Spathopoulos worked as an exploration geologist in petroleum exploration projects for more than 20 years for both conventional and unconventional reservoirs. From 1990 to 2006 he worked as a geologist and basin analyst in HESS Ltd and other oil companies, where he was involved in determining the petroleum systems of various basins in the world and in looking for new petroleum plays, where he has worked in the following geological areas:
- South and Middle Caspian Sea
- North Sea Exploration
- West Africa, South Atlantic Basins
- NW African Continental Margin
- Caspian Sea and Eastern Mediterranean
He has compiled a large study of the source rocks of the world, including a method to predict source rock deposition and quality in every basin and at every geological interval. He is also an expert in maturity modeling, using the PetroMod software, as well as in organic geochemistry, sequence stratigraphy, sedimentology and formation pressure analysis.
During his career time at the Imperial College London, he lectures on “Geology of Petroleum Source Rocks”, “Petroleum Systems Analysis”, “Formation Pressure Analysis” and “Unconventional Petroleum” and also participates in several University-Industry projects related to shale characterization as shale-gas/shale-oil targets.
Dr Fivos’s membership and aliations include the following:
- Petroleum Exploration Society of Great Britain, Member (1997 - Present)
- Geological Society of London, Member (2006 - Present)
- UNFC Group (United Nations Fossil Fuel and Mineral Classication), Panel Member (2006 - Present)
Dr Fivos graduated with a B.Sc. degree in Geology from the University of Athens, a Master's degree in "Marine Geology & Geophysics" from the University of London and a Ph.D. in Geology from the University of London.
