About Training

This class describes the many elements of petroleum engineering and the necessity of good interaction between geoscientists and petroleum engineers. The course begins with describing members of the exploration/development team and the challenge they face in the quest to find and produce naturally occurring hydrocarbons. There are many functions that make up petroleum engineering are described as well as the necessary interactions between disciplines.
Basic reservoir parameters, such as porosity, permeability, water saturation and relative permeability are reviewed and the importance of using correct values (not just the recorded value) of each is explained. Volumetric calculations are then described as well as properties of hydrocarbons that affect both volume and producing rates.  Drive mechanisms are covered and how recovery factors are influenced by both drive and fluid characteristics. Methods are discussed for forecasting production and possible ultimate recoveries. The need for economic evaluations of projects is reviewed and the difference between resources and reserves is discussed.

Training Objectives

  • Gain a better understanding of the various petroleum engineering functions a
  • Interact  with geoscientists and other engineers
  • Learn about the different physical properties of hydrocarbons and how they affect production.
  • Gain knowledge of what occurs in the reservoir in relation to drive mechanisms and resulting recovery.
  • Learn and understand the need for accurate reservoir characterization in resource/reserve calculations.
  • Gain an understanding on how to estimate oil/gas in place more accurately with volumetric calculations and recovery factor to calculate estimated ultimate recovery.

Audiences

Geoscientists, land personnel, attorneys, financial and accounting managers, support professional and other non-technical personnel who require a basic understanding of petroleum engineering.
