About Training

Wellsite Geologists are mainly involved in evaluating offset data before beginning any drilling operations. The focus of this course is aimed at improving the conduct of data acquisition of the subsurface region. Because the subsurface data acquisition entails big capital expenditure, it is important to obtain quality information for future use in field development designs and drilling operations. The course is aimed at wellsite geologists, drilling and operations engineers and other staff involved in the acquisition and use of well-site geological data. At the end of the course, participants will have grasped the basic principles of well-site data acquisition and quality control. This will focus on the data acquired at the wellsite from drilling, logging, and well testing. They will learn the techniques used in formation evaluation through lectures, integrated with practical exercises. Participants will be exposed to cuttings analysis and oil show examinations. They will acquire an understanding of drilling problems caused by subsurface conditions, and of applications of well-site data in exploration and development.

Training Objectives

  • ACQUIRE the understanding of drilling problems caused by subsurface conditions, and of applications of wellsite data in exploration and development
  • LEARN the basic principles of wellsite data acquisition and quality control
  • APPLY the techniques used by well geologists in formation evaluation through lectures, integrated with practical exercises
  • PERFORM hands-on exercise of cutting analysis and oil show examination
  • MONITOR execution of the phase of a well, make informed decisions, and manage data, and advise on coring and wireline logging actitivities
  • MANAGE contractor activities and maintain quality control on data acquisition and operations
  • ORGANIZE end of well activities including reporting, lessons learned meetings and final data distribution

Audiences

  • Subsurface Geologists
  • Wellsite Geologists
  • Drilling Engineers
  • Reservoir, and Operations Engineers and other staff involved in the acquisition, use of well-site geological data, and operations geology.

Instructor

John Keasberry

John is an exploration geologist and principal partner in J&M GeoScience Services. In a 33 year career span he worked as such in Ethiopia, the UK, Ireland, Canada, the US, Turkey, the Middle East, the Far East, Ecuador, Norway and the Netherlands, associated with companies as Placid, Barrick Petroleum, Santa Fe, Statoil, Unocal, Shell, and numerous small independents as either an employee or consultant.

He has been involved mostly in the exploration and development phases of the petroleum development, from new ventures and asset acquisition, seismic interpretation, basin analysis, appraisal to farm-out and production. John joined United Nations in Ethiopia in 1975, carrying out geophysical surveys for oil, gas, groundwater and minerals. He moved to Placid Oil in 1979 as seismic interpreter and McKinlay Smith in 1981 as a geoscientist.

In 1983 he founded his first consultancy in London carrying out interpretation and evaluation projects in the UK, Netherlands and Norway. In 1985 he joined Nedlloyd Energy as exploration manager, responsible for Nedlloyds portfolio in the Netherlands, UK, Egypt, Ecuador and Indonesia. When Nedlloyd was sold to DSM (Dutch State Mines) in 1992 he became an independent consultant again.

From 1997 through 2004 he was employed by Shell as a Course Director responsible for their integrated subsurface course covering the main subsurface disciplines from geology to production technology and developing geoscience courses. He also lectured frequently on other Shell courses.

His lecturing experience is mainly in petroleum-, wellsite- and operations geology, but is also covering disciplines as petrophysics, reservoir and well engineering.  During his career he has conducted numerous geological and integrated field courses, lately in Belgium and Germany. Today his 30-plus year worldwide experience in a broad field of geoscience aspects is put to use in his consulting partnership with his wife.

John received a B.Sc in Geology and a M.Sc. in Geology and Applied Geophysics from the University of Leiden, Netherlands.
