About Training
This course is based on geo-mechanics as a sound foundation for structural geological concepts and seismic interpretation. Following an introduction to geo-mechanics, the main tectonic regimes and associated structural features will form the backbone of the course. Structural concepts, development of structures, structural styles and structural geometries will be covered per tectonic regime. Exercises and case histories ensure a live course in a hands-on workshop format.
This practical oriented course is intended for geoscientists working in exploration and production of hydrocarbons. Having followed the course, the participants will be able to geomechanically correct structural interpretations, understand natural fracture networks, including the formation of conduits open fractures) and seals (sealing fractures and faults) in different tectonic regimes. The participants will be introduced to the main elements of petroleum systems and geo-mechanics, which will serve as a basis for an integrated geological approach. Case histories will be extensively used for illustration material and to help understand the geomechanic process. Last but not the least, a portable Sandbox Tool will be used for demonstration analogue modeling of the main tectonic regimes.
Training Objectives
- DIFFERENTIATE the structural regimes manifestations, and their key features in 2D or 3D seismic data
- UNDERSTAND the basic element of hydrocarbon generation, tectonic regimes, and their significance for petroleum geology
- DEDUCE vital stress information from structural geometries
- LEARN to quantify stresses in the subsurface and APPLY this to exploration and production of hydrocarbons
- LESSEN the uncertainties by reducing the degrees of freedom in geological modeling
- UNDERSTAND the benefits and pitfalls of state of the art seismic and image logging techniques
Audiences
The course is designed for Geologists and Geophysicists with a solid academic background in structural geology concepts and with current or past exploration/development assignments and work experience in structurally complex regions.
- Geoscientists
- Geologists
- Geophysicists
- Seismic Interpreters
Instructor
Dr. Dirk Nieuwland
Dr Dirk Nieuwland is a well-known consultant and geologist with over 34 years of experience in the Oil & Gas industry. He graduated in geology at Leiden University and did a PhD at the Research School of Earth Sciences at the Australian National University in Canberra. He joined Shell in 1979 and worked as research geologist in structural geology in the Shell research lab in Rijswijk, The Netherlands.
He then worked for Shell as production geologist in Thailand and as chief geologist in Turkey, thereafter resuming his carrier as senior research geologist at Shell Research. In this position he was responsible for technical advice in exploration and production; he developed and gave in-house workshops and seminars for Shell and for a number of State Oil Companies.
In 1999 Dirk moved to the Vrije Universiteit in Amsterdam where he joined the newly formed Top Research school in Earth Sciences (ISES: Integrated Solid Earth Systems) heading the analogue modelling lab of the tectonics department.
In 1999 he founded NewTec, a consultancy company though which he continues to be active in the E&P business. Moreover, he has also devoted his time to teaching as a visiting professor at the Middle East Technical University in Ankara Turkey, and at the Geology Department of the University of Saltzburg, Austria.
