About Training

Artificial lift plays a crucial role in Oil & Gas production, especially in mature oilfield. Artificial lift is not only accelerating the production, but also vital to the economic success of the overall development. Therefore, selecting and designing the appropriate artificial lift is important. After completing the course, the participants will possess and enhance the skill to select, design, plan, analyze and optimize the artificial lift system for offshore oilfield.
The course will start with Multi-Phase Flow and NODAL Analysis and how to compare and select the correct artificial lift system. A thorough understanding on the principles, applications, design and operational issues on the artificial lift system will be provided. Delegates will also learn through case studies and exercises every training day to gain practical knowledge from the trainer’s past experiences.
Besides designing, the delegates will also learn to analyze the cost when selecting the artificial lift system. Furthermore, the course will cover the advanced artificial lift systems currently available. The delegates will gain knowledge on the advantages and disadvantages of each type of the advanced artificial lift system.

Training Objectives

  • Thorough understanding of the fundamentals and the production performance of the various artificial lift methods for offshore application.
  • Possess the skills needed to select and design an artificial lift system, plan its operation, monitor, analyze and optimize its performance.
  • Be able to manage and control the production of artificial lift wells and fields
  • Be able to study and compare the cost between artificial lift systems.
  • Real Time data gathering and interpretation

Instructor

Jeff Kain

Jeff Kain, a Canadian citizen, has worked in the oil industry for more than 40 years and specializes in Production Optimization and Artificial lift. Jeff has worked for operators all over the world, as well as artificial lift equipment suppliers (Schlumberger and Centrilift).

Jeff has spent the last year and a half working on state of the art workflows, for Optimization and Diagnostics of Artificial Lift using Realtime (SCADA) data and is uniquely positioned to teach a course that embraces the latest Optimization technology. This combined with his Artificial Lift knowledge and experience provides course attendees with a unique perspective, from the traditional engineering and operations work processes to the most advanced leading edge Optimization technologies in the world.

Jeff was the Lead Instructor for the global Schlumberger Artificial Lift Production Optimization courses which also included design, diagnostics and operations modules. This course is recognized as a pre-requisite for development & training for Production Engineers in the Oil industry. He has delivered Production, Operations & Artificial Lift Courses in Brazil, Venezuela, Colombia, Peru, Ecuador, USA, Canada, Russia, France, UK, Egypt, Qatar, Oman, Indonesia, China, Singapore, United Arab Emirates, India, Australia and Sudan.

As well as being a subject matter expert in artificial lift, Jeff has a good overall grounding in Production Technology gained while working with Imperial Oil, Exxon’s Canadian affiliate, as Production / Operations Engineer in his early career. This combined with his working knowledge of multi-national company corporate management, budget management, economics and organizational development and training provides a unique understanding of how oil companies conduct their day to day business. He has lived and worked on artificial lift and operations projects in Russia, China, North America, Middle East and South America including Offshore Platforms in Africa and Australia.

As a global consultant, he has vast experience world wide. To name a few, his major projects include:

- Russia - Led a multi-disciplined team to review ESP operations in four (4) business units for a major Russian company. This review included analyzing Application Engineering methodologies, Equipment Selection strategies, Design strategies, field installation procedures, and Repair/Assembly Facilities procedures.

- North Sea - Conducted a review of Artificial Lift of three (3) green fields the primary lift type focus on Gas Lift & ESP.

- Canada - Analyzed Abrasion Resistant technology including Equipment Selection, Design, Slurry loop Testing and the development of operation procedures.

Some of his clients include: Halliburton / KOC, Pemex, Apache Corporation, Encana / VAALCO, Schlumberger Completions Courses, Schlumberger DCS, etc.
