About Training
Advanced Basin Analysis is key to understanding and identification major basin settings for petroleum prospectivity. It evaluates the potential successful basins in exploration for hydrocarbons.
Major settings that will be discussed include Rifts Systems, Deltaic Systems, Deepwater Systems, Wrench-Related Systems, and Carbonate Systems will be covered in terms of their predictive geological potential for hydrocarbon reserves.
Draws on Global & Regional Basin Examples
Across all basin types, a number of regional and international examples will be presented along with practical exercises a small number will be carried out in stages through the week – these will involve a ‘play-based exploration’ approach to one or more provinces that are relevant to the course.
Major Evaluation Project at the End of the Program
Most importantly, there will be a major in-class exercise which will bring attendees to evaluate a major basin, complete with the required data types, to assess its potential for development.
Training Objectives
ANALYZE PETROLEUM PROSPECTIVITY OF MAJOR BASIN SETTINGS
Gain an advanced understanding of the major basin settings and their analysis for petroleum prospectivity
RELATE BASIN GEOLOGICAL ANALYSIS TO THE POTENTIAL OF SUCCESSFUL BASIN IN EXPLORING FOR HYDROCARBONS
Evaluate basin formation and basin fills of Rift Basins, Deltaic Systems, Deepwater Systems, and Carbonate Systems and their application to potential basins
LEARN FROM EXAMPLES AND ANALOGUES OF WHAT MAKES OF A SUCCESSFUL BASIN
Understand various examples of various basin types through well-described petroleum systems from around the world, with emphasis in Southeast Asian basins, especially Malaysian basins
Audiences
The course is designed for exploration and new ventures geologists, and geophysicists early in their careers. Good geological knowledge is assumed. At least 5 years experience is required, with good knowledge of petroleum geology, and some seismic and well log interpretation experience.
Job Titles Include:
- Exploration Geologists
- Geoscientists
- Basin Analysts & Modellers
- Subsurface Managers
- Exploration Managers
Instructor
DR. Harry Doust
Dr. Harry Doust, British citizen, gained Bachelor(First Class Honours) and PhD degrees in Geology from London University in the UK, graduating in 1968. He joined Shell International in the same year and, through a career of 33 years with the company, worked in a variety of geoscience disciplines and parts of the world. He had postings to The Netherlands, Turkey, Oman, Malaysia and Nigeria and built extensive experience of the petroleum geology of these areas, as well as in the Asia – Pacific area, Africa and Latin Americain general. As team leader in Malaysia in the 1970’s, he was largely responsible for the discovery of the J4 oil-field and early appraisal of gas discoveries in the Central Luconia area of Sarawak. Following an appointment as chief geologist in the Shell Development Company in Nigeria (1983-1986), he spent several years evaluating new venture opportunities, supervising Shell’s global exploration study programme and providing consultancy services to exploration units. His final function in Shell was to lead teams reviewing the organisation of Shell exploration operating companies worldwide, introducing best practices, ensuring the value of investment proposals and the viability of annual company exploration and appraisal plans. Upon his retirement in 2001, Harry was appointed professor of Regional and Petroleum Geology at the Free University of Amsterdam in The Netherlands, a post he held for 10 years. He still lectures there, but is currently primarily attached to the University of Utrecht, where he is visiting Professor. As well as teaching MSc students, Harry has supervised PhD projects and executed research into petroleum system and play development subjects about which he has published widely in leading geoscience journals.
In addition to teaching in The Netherlands, Harry teaches and had taught MSc courses extensively at other universities, including Universiti Malaya in Kuala Lumpur (several courses in each of the past 5 – 6 years), UTP (UniversitiTeknologiPetronas),Tronoh and ADEKUS University in Paramaribo, Suriname. He has also participated as chair or committee member in several governing and planning bodies, such as the international programme for Integrated Scientific Ocean Drilling (IODP). He has also conducted many courses and lectures in petroleum system development for the energy industry, both individually and in conference context. Companies he has consulted for include Shell, Gazde France, Wintershall, Santos, Statoil, Inpex andthe New Zealand Government.
His research interests are related to the relationships between sedimentary basin evolution and petroleum-system and play development worldwide. He has developed a methodology that facilitates the application of these concepts, the identification of analogue situations and fields that can be compared with new venture prospects, and ensures a robust understanding of all aspects of the subsurface relevant to petroleum accumulation. Harry is a long-time Fellow of the Geological Society of London and a 30-year long member of the AAPG (American Association of Petroleum Geologists). He is also a member of the Geological Society of The Netherlands and an editor of the journal Marine and Petroleum Geology.
