About Training

It is know that two-third of the original oil in place are still in the ground. Petroleum companies are looking for techniques to improve sweep efficiency and increase recovery factors. As a result, Enhanced Oil Recovery (EOR) processes need to be carried out. Successful WAG floods can yield 5-20% additional oil recovery over waterflood because of improved microscopic displacement efficiency by the solvent coupled with improving areal and vertical sweep efficiency.

The Water Alternating Gas (WAG) process can be optimized by using CO2 instead of natural gas, and adding some chemical additives in the water slug such as Alkalis, Surfactant and Polymers. This improvement in the WAG process by using chemical in the water slug is known as Chemical WAG or CWAG.

Gas slug is intended to be miscible to control mobility ratio, increase oil saturation because of the swelling, oil production and decrease water production. On the other hand, residual oil saturation is reduced by using surfactant in the water slug and Alkalis (generate surfactant in situ) as well as polymer to control mobility ratio.

WAG and CWAG screening criteria are also important to guarantee the success during implementation of these technologies. Detailed lab tests and pilot are needed to be conducted to understand the contribution of miscibility in the gas slug and the use of chemical to reduce oil saturation.
