Trusted by Leading Companies

Our training programs are promoted to engineers, supervisors, and technical teams across the globe, supporting their continuous development and operational competency.

About Training

Enhanced Oil Recovery is usually conducted when a reservoir has shown a decline in productivity and Chemical EOR is one of the tertiary methods required to improve the oil & gas recovery. Proper management and process of Chemical EOR will withdraw excessive oil in reservoir and increase production of oil .

Our Modern Aspects of Chemical EOR course is developed to provide comprehensive coverage of all chemical EOR processes. The course materials are based on the instructor’s hands-on experience and personal collection of field cases and learning.

Course Design Focuses on Practical Applications
This course focuses on practical aspects and applications of Chemical EOR as well as the significant theories behind it.

Includes Specific and Practical Case Studies
This course covers a lot of case studies based on instructor’s personal collection of field cases, especially from Chinese field practices where chemical EOR projects are mostly done. Quizzes and calculation exercises are included. You will also learn how to manage real Chemical EOR process by undergoing a closely guided
hands-on simulation practice for Chemical EOR using the UTCHEM software.

Training Objectives

Develop Best Fit of Synergies in Chemical EOR
Develop Best Fit of Synergies in Chemical EOR by learning each EOR mechanism and the combined EOR methods.

Identify the Key Parameters and Data Range of Each Chemical Process
Able to identify the key parameters and data range by practical learning through examples of field projects.

Gain Non-Academic Knowledge of Chemical EOR
Gain the knowledge which is not available from academic studies by learning from real personal experiences and field studies rom Dr. James .

Improve Oil Recovery in Oil Production Stage
Improve oil recovery by learning to design, optimize and carry out simulation practice of Chemical EOR Project

Manage Real Chemical EOR Process
Attain best practices in Chemical EOR processes through managing real Chemical EOR Process by understanding and learning Chemical EOR Simulation using UTCHEM software.

Instructor

Dr. James Sheng

Dr. James Sheng is an associate professor in the petroleum department of Texas Tech University, USA. He had worked in the oil industry for 20+ years before joining academia. While working in the industry for TOTAL, Baker Hughes, Shell, Kuwait Oil Company, and China National Petroleum Company, James has developed his expertise in these areas:enhanced oil recovery, reservoir simulation and numerical modeling, well and formation testing, heavy oil recovery, and reservoir management and production forecast. Now he is actively working on EOR and shale research. He holds a Ph.D. degree from University of Alberta. He has (co)authored over 70 papers, and holds 4 US patents and 2 provisional US patents. He has published two books:(1) Chemical Enhanced Oil Recovery, (2) EOR Field Case Studies.

He holds a Ph.D. degree from University of Alberta. He has (co)authored over 40 papers, and holds 4 US patents and 2 provisional US patents. He is the book author of “Modern Chemical Enhanced Oil Recovery”.

He received several professional awards including the SPE Regional Technical Award – Formation Evaluation (Southwestern US region) in 2013, the Fulbright Specialist Grant administrated by FSB, UD ECA and CIES and to help PetroVietnam University to establish their petroleum program in 2013, the OutstandingTechnical Editor Award (2005) and the Outstanding Associate Editor Award (2008) forSPEREE, and the Best Paper Award in JCPT (1997). He was an associate editor(2005-2009) for SPEREE and an associate editor for the Journal of Petroleum Science and Engineering(2008-2011). He is also a member of the SPE “A Peer Apart” group. Each member in this group reviewed more than 100 SPE papers. He served journals as technical Editors for JCPT (1996-2000), SPEREE (2005 – 2010), SPWLA (2005), SPEJ (2006 – present), and J.Pet. Sci. Eng. (2008 – present). He also served the SPE Kuwait section as the secretary (1998-1999).

Daily Aims

DAY 1 & DAY 2

Day 1 begins with concepts about EOR such as incremental recovery and salinity. These are brief concepts to understand and select EOR methods.
Day 1 and Day 2 continue with polymer flooding. The key parameters of polymer flooding are polymer viscosity to improve mobility ratio, and permeability reduction to improve injection profile. Special cases will be discussed.

  • Introduction to Chemical EOR
  • Polymer Flooding

DAY 3

Day 3 covers the chemical EOR process – surfactant flooding. To carry out a field project, we need to know what lab tests we need to do; we need to understand the parameters which are related to the reduction of residual oil saturation such as capillary number, IFT and capillary desaturation curve.

  • Surfactant Flooding

DAY 4

Day 4 first covers alkaline reactions, followed by combined methods. We focus on the important aspects of combined methods: their interactions and synergies. We will address some important questions such as why single alkaline flooding may not work well, why polymer is always needed.

  • Alkaline Flooding
  • Alkaline-Surfactant-Polymer Flooding
  • Screening Criteria for Chemical EOR Processes
  • Special Issues from Course Participants

DAY 5

Day 5 summarizes advantages and disadvantages of each method and combined methods, and focuses on the problems with ASP which are much less discussed in the literature. We will discuss some practical issues and answer the questions from the attendees which will give the attendees an opportunity to make the best use of this course.

  • Alkaline-Surfactant-Polymer Flooding
  • Screening Criteria for Chemical EOR Processes
  • Special Issues from Course Participants
