About Training

This five day Drilling Fluids Course provides a comprehensive overview of the functions of drilling fluids and drilling fluid additives. Participants will learn how to recognise drilling fluid problems and more so how to restore the properties for a successfull job. The course content covers both water-based and oil-based mud systems. Special drilling fluids like for HP/HT appplications as well as for Deepwater drilling will also be discussed. Participants will be able to gain knowledge in the chemistry and physics of drilling fluids, such as clay chemistry, polymers chemistry and rheology. Rheological models in use will be dealt with to manage hole cleaning successfully in deviated and horizontal wells. Drilling depleted reservoirs whilst preventing differential sticking is a most popular subject.

The use of drill-in fluids to drill the reservoir section without causing production loss to a well (impairment) is another favorite. The use of brines and other fluids for completion fluids is a major topic of this course as well as the design and operational aspects of cementing fluids and spacers. Last but not least, we will also touch on the negotiating and managing of contracts for fluids, chemicals and services. The course is delivered in a daily presentation format, with practical instruction given. The course materials handout will contain all information covered and can be used for future reference. The course is based on a balanced combination of classroom teaching, group discussions and many practical examples of successes and failures.

Training Objectives

  • LEARN the purpose of oilwell drilling fluids and why the fluids used are vital to a successful well.
  • UNDERSTAND the various fluid systems and additive products in use.
  • APPLY fluid selections based on the nature of geological formations and physical conditions encountered as well as environmental legislation.
  • LEARN the API test protocols necessary to measure the health of your mud system and to complete a mud report form.
  • APPLY the test data to optimise fluid properties and functions.
  • LEARN how to troubleshoot drilling fluid operations.

Instructor

Ben Arentz

Ben has 37 years of experience with chemical applications in the Upstream Oil & Gas Industry. After completing his BSc studies in Physical Chemistry and Analytical Chemistry in 1976, he started his career in oil field chemicals research with Shell in 1976. After working for 9 years on production chemicals, drilling fluids and cementing research, he moved into operational jobs in The Netherlands, Brunei, Oman, Syria and Malaysia. In between doing some more applied research work in Houston, Texas. He has been named the global Principal Technical Expert on production Chemicals with Shell as well as a Subject Matter Expert on well fluids. As a Shell Production Chemistry manager he has been responsible for all chemical applications in an area covering Pakistan to New Zealand. He has been a member of the API drilling fluids standards committee since 1985. Specializing in drilling and completion fluids and cementing technology transfer, Ben has been lecturing these subjects since 2000. He has been giving classes, often combined with practical laboratory sessions in The Netherlands, Oman, Malasyia, Brunei, China and Nigeria. Since retiring from Shell in 2014, Ben has been active as an independant training professional, also presenting tailor made in-house training for clients.
