About Training
Basin Analysis is key to building a depth of understanding of how sedimentary basins form and evolve, and how this has a fundamental control of working petroleum systems.
This program will present the skills than can enhance basin analysis. This includes coverage of analytic parameters to petroleum accumulation, concepts of subsurface processes, sedimentary basin characteristics, and their link to recognition, and development of petroleum systems and plays.
This program will provide explorationists with practical insights into the key workflow and geological concepts in basin analysis to describe and evaluate working petroleum systems and associated plays. This will be presented through extensive examples of successful plays worldwide, various Southeast Asian basins, and with a special focus on the Malaysian region.
To fully provide a holistic understanding of the exploration business, the program will begin with an industrial history of exploration and development in the region. It will then proceed to the technical skills than can enhance basin analysis --- this includes coverage on analytic parameters to petroleum accumulation, concepts of subsurface processes, sedimentary basin characteristics and their link to recognition, and development of petroleum systems and play. This will be further illustrated with worldwide examples as well as Southeast Asian Tertiary Basins.
Furthermore, the main methods in play and prospect identification, basin analysis, and evaluation will be explained in details with geochemical and basin modeling considerations. Lastly, attendees will also learn about risk and uncertainty management in exploration play and prospect stages in order to estimate the potential success of an exploration project.
The program will be concluded with the linkage of basin analysis exp to the development and production phases. This will be illustrated with field examples of key issues experienced during these stages. Class exercises illustrating the important concepts include actual basin ranking, subsurface mapping, seismic interpretation, and subsurface conditions evaluation will be done across sessions. Attendees of this course will be able to better equip their practical knowledge with the region’s best practices in basin analysis and evaluation to later on advance their skills in prospect appraisals.

Instructor
DR. Harry Doust
Dr. Harry Doust, British citizen, gained Bachelor(First Class Honours) and PhD degrees in Geology from London University in the UK, graduating in 1968. He joined Shell International in the same year and, through a career of 33 years with the company, worked in a variety of geoscience disciplines and parts of the world. He had postings to The Netherlands, Turkey, Oman, Malaysia and Nigeria and built extensive experience of the petroleum geology of these areas, as well as in the Asia – Pacific area, Africa and Latin Americain general. As team leader in Malaysia in the 1970’s, he was largely responsible for the discovery of the J4 oil-field and early appraisal of gas discoveries in the Central Luconia area of Sarawak. Following an appointment as chief geologist in the Shell Development Company in Nigeria (1983-1986), he spent several years evaluating new venture opportunities, supervising Shell’s global exploration study programme and providing consultancy services to exploration units. His final function in Shell was to lead teams reviewing the organisation of Shell exploration operating companies worldwide, introducing best practices, ensuring the value of investment proposals and the viability of annual company exploration and appraisal plans. Upon his retirement in 2001, Harry was appointed professor of Regional and Petroleum Geology at the Free University of Amsterdam in The Netherlands, a post he held for 10 years. He still lectures there, but is currently primarily attached to the University of Utrecht, where he is visiting Professor. As well as teaching MSc students, Harry has supervised PhD projects and executed research into petroleum system and play development subjects about which he has published widely in leading geoscience journals.
In addition to teaching in The Netherlands, Harry teaches and had taught MSc courses extensively at other universities, including Universiti Malaya in Kuala Lumpur (several courses in each of the past 5 – 6 years), UTP (UniversitiTeknologiPetronas),Tronoh and ADEKUS University in Paramaribo, Suriname. He has also participated as chair or committee member in several governing and planning bodies, such as the international programme for Integrated Scientific Ocean Drilling (IODP). He has also conducted many courses and lectures in petroleum system development for the energy industry, both individually and in conference context. Companies he has consulted for include Shell, Gazde France, Wintershall, Santos, Statoil, Inpex andthe New Zealand Government.
His research interests are related to the relationships between sedimentary basin evolution and petroleum-system and play development worldwide. He has developed a methodology that facilitates the application of these concepts, the identification of analogue situations and fields that can be compared with new venture prospects, and ensures a robust understanding of all aspects of the subsurface relevant to petroleum accumulation. Harry is a long-time Fellow of the Geological Society of London and a 30-year long member of the AAPG (American Association of Petroleum Geologists). He is also a member of the Geological Society of The Netherlands and an editor of the journal Marine and Petroleum Geology.
